The Movember Movement

Movember is more than a month - it’s a movement.

Each November, attention turns to men’s health, from testicular and prostate cancer to mental wellbeing. It’s a reminder that early detection, regular check-ups and open conversations can save lives. Men are often taught to stay strong, to keep going, to push through. But real strength lies in awareness - in noticing when something doesn’t feel right and taking action early.

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men aged 15 to 45. The outlook is excellent when it’s found early, with cure rates of around 90%. A simple self-check once a month takes only a few minutes. Look for any lumps, swelling or changes in size or shape. If something feels different, see a doctor. Early action makes all the difference.

Prostate cancer affects one in eight men in their lifetime, but early detection saves lives. Most cases are found in the early stages through screening. Men over 50 should speak to their GP about a PSA blood test, and those with a family history or higher risk factors should consider screening even earlier. A simple conversation could be life-saving.

Mental health is just as important as physical health. One in four men will face a mental health challenge, yet many still struggle in silence. Feeling anxious, stressed or low isn’t a flaw - it’s a signal that something needs care. Reaching out for help is an act of courage, not weakness. Starting a conversation, checking in with a friend, or asking someone how they’re really doing can make a world of difference.

Men’s health isn’t only about medical checks - it’s about the small, everyday habits that protect both body and mind. Move often, eat well, rest properly and stay connected. These choices build resilience and wellbeing over time. Don’t wait until something feels wrong to pay attention.

Movember is a chance to pause, reflect and act. To look after yourself and the men around you. Because awareness leads to prevention, and conversation can lead to change. Every mind and every life deserves care.
